review 1: I have had this book on my TBR pile for quite some time and was very much looking forward to reading it. Then, when reading the reviews, I felt less motivated as the reviews were not great. But. I am SO happy that I did pick it up and read it. Very different from anything I've read before. There aren't any happy characters in this book so, it's a bit of a downer, but I loved the way it was written, from all the different perspectives. I definitely recommend it. It's a long book, but it didn't take me long to get through it.
review 2: A much hyped book, both in terms of commercial success and critical significance. Having heard so much that was positive, I was inevitably disappointed. Fundamentally, this was due to not liking any of the characters. If this book... more is anything to go by, suburban Australia is peopled solely baby self-obsessed hedonist idiots, dripping in selfishness, prejudice and a constant lust for more. The book is unnecessarily sexually explicit, and the plot stutters and coughs, never really gripping enough to make us care about any of the central characters. The book is written from the point of view of 8 different people; the different narrative voices are well executed by the author, but this wasn't enough for me. By the end I was glad to finish; the last character was the only one I got close to liking. But that may simply have been relief that I knew I wasn't going to need to spend much time with any of them once he was done with. It's OK, but significantly over praised. less
