review 1: This was my first Chuck Wendig book, and I must say he is twisted individual. Just my type. I loved this book. A vampire wakes up, a dried husk jolted back to life was dripping blood. He finds the world is full of zombies and his live blood supply is dwindling fast, so he has to overcome his impulse to gorge on every living human he meets, and starts to treat this one group as his personal herd, acting as their shepherd. As is typical of dystopian sagas, they encounter dangers and adventures while trying to reach their destination (in this case, the west coast). Very enjoyable.
review 2: Given the premise of this book, I had low expectations. To my surprise, this book was quite good. It's no masterpiece, but for a first book, it was readable and had a fema... morele character I related to on a strong, personal level. To have one of the mains be someone with a serious illness (in this case cancer), yet still have her personality be not intrinsically tied into it, have her worth as a human being somehow separate from this, was a refreshing take. For me, the character of Kayla alone was enough to make this an enjoyable read. The fact that the book is able to balance such a serious narrative with an over the top plot bodes well for Wendig's future books, and it does seem he had a lot of fun writing this- hopefully as much fun as I had reading it. If you want vampires, zombies, and a juggalo kingdom, this book has got it, balanced out with people who are well aware of the stakes of things. less
