review 1: Carla Richards is a divorced artist who works as a waitress in a Mexican Restaurant located in an Igloo in Anchorage Alaska. She lives in a trailer park with her genius son, JJ, her babysitter, Stephanie, and her dog, Killer Bee. Her credit cards are maxed out and her former husband hasn’t paid child support for a while. Her attempt at drowning in the bathtub failed so she wrapped herself in a big a towel and turned on the TV where she heard a giant of a woman on Oprah talk about saving your life through journaling. She gives it a go and begins to turn her life around. She finds an outlet for her Barbie themed art on the internet and keeps an appointment with financial counselor. This tale, told through journal entries, emails to creditors and recipes from her Polish... more grandmother, has readers cheering for our hardworking blue collar heroine with a sense of humor.
review 2: This was a fun read. The characters were relatable and the story moved along quickly. The main character's voice changed slightly throughout. At first I thought that was weak writing but realized that was a result of the growth she was doing. The story could have been wrapped up before the last ~100 pages. That would have been the typical happy ending with no real payoff. The last 100 pages made it a much more satisfying read. less
