review 1: This book just wowed me. I went into it thinking that I may or may not like it as it was free at the time that I got it. I was quickly pulled into a wonderful story about going home with your head held high even when you want to buy it in the sand. From the first few pages my heart reached out to Libby. Libby's father forced her from her childhood home when she was 17 and pregnant. What parent does that! Libby struggled to make a life for her daughter, Nicole. She finally has no choice but to go home again even though her father doesn't want to have anything to do with her. Once she is back home, her dad totally ignores both her and Nicole. She is reacquainted with her next door neighbor and brother's best friend, Gibson. Gibson has a daughter as well, Allie. The... morey are both in second grade. There are a lot of emotions that you will feel in this book. I was mad at Libby because for most of the book she let everyone think that she went away on purpose. She was making herself the bad guy and making her dad look like the wounded one. I got mad at the way that Allie treated Nicole. Little girls can be so mean to each other. I loved how Gibson tried to love Libby, but she was still a bit standoffish. This story will grip you and not let you go. I had tears in my eyes for the struggles that Libby and Nicole had and how Nicole never complained. My heart melted for her. Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.
review 2: This is the first book that I have read by CJ Carmichael, and I am hooked. I was relieved to see that she has many other novels (30+)in her library of work.We meet Libby Bateman, a young single mother, struggling to raise her daughter Nicole, in Toronto. Having left school before graduation, Libby can only find work that pays minimum wage.As a result Libby and her daughter live in a constant state of anxiety. Unable to bear the resignation that lives permanently in her daughters eyes, Libby takes the bold step to move back home, to the place she is unwanted. One cannot help but fall in love with Libby and Nicole, it is painful to feel their hunger and sadness, so we want more for them. That Libby has a scrap of fight left in her leaves us cheering her on, wanting to believe we could find that same resilience in ourselves. The methodical plan that she sets in motion to improve their future reveals the past and helps us to feel compassion for all the players in this well crafted novel. My passion for self-discovery and the courage and wisdom that this journey takes left me wanting to read more of Ms. Carmichaels work. This is a must read. less

Another good beach read ... single parenthood, family relationships all wrapped up in a love story.

Very cute for a freebie chick-lit book. Predictable, but like able characters.
Amber
A bit sugary and predictable for me, but harmless and a good holiday read.
