review 1: Looks like a really interesting series. Pity that the copy I came across was number 13 in the series. The wealth of detail about the very intricate web of social/family relationships and the organization of the Atevi culture and its (in this book) mostly implied relationship and interaction with Earthmen seems like it shows real potential - want to read more in the series - hopefully from the begining!
review 2: I liked this book a lot. It's very psychological and political, mild physical action and lots of emotional/societal action. I have not read the 12 books that preceded it in its universe; it felt like a wrapping up of many, many plot threads. Yet it was interesting and engaging in its own right and made me appreciate ambassadors and diplomats much mor... moree than previously. (Remember that scene in Star Trek VI where Spock answers the question, "If we cannot figure out what happened?" with the phrase, "Then it will be in the purview of the diplomats" ? Yeah, this was a similar situation, but later in the mop-up stages.) less
