review 1: Nina starts out her journey behind walls, after civilization fell and zombies roamed. And ate people. She is not happy in this "safe" place behind the wall because the man in charge is power hungry and controls the people, what they eat, what their work assignments are, when they eat, what they do. Any offenders of the stringent rules are punished by banishment outside the walls. She has seen this happen many times but one day a young teenage girl is being put out because she stole food. Nina decides she has had enough and says she will go with her. Outside the walls it is much different from what they were told. It is not all blackened and destroyed with zombies everywhere. Well, there are zombies for sure. Survival outside the walls with nothing but the clothes they were... more wearing is a difficult task. They begin foraging for food and weapons. Their journey is a tough one and Nina is a very hard person after her experiences behind the wall. She has a rule for herself to not become attached to anyone but the young girl she is bound to protect captures her heart. I will let you find out about the other adventures they experience. I liked Nina's changing heart. She has never fought zombies before so must learn to protect them both. Yes, they meet other characters. This is not a YA book, it is very realistic, for adults, partly due to language. I can't wait to continue with their journey in the second Odium book.
review 2: I liked it! Could do with more world-building and I was. not. shocked by the reveal, but the characters were interesting and had some depth. I appreciated that they didn't get god-modded beyond recognition and had human frailties and imperfections. The plot... feels a bit pointless and repetitious but I guess it could be classified as slice-of-life... in Zombieland. Nina is pretty freaking grim, though. I didn't have any lol's. I also thought some of the character development at the end didn't have the groundwork laid for it. Gonna read the next book though!!! less
