review 1: Very good book from the early 20th Century. This author wrote it in the 1920's and her family is only now publishing them. This initial book was very good. I can't say the end was much of a surprise but it did take me a bit to work the details of how it was done. It was the callousness of the killer that surprised me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it only took me a few days to read. It is not a modern whodunit but it was really good, light vacation read. Like most novels from this period, it is squeaky clean. No swear words or sex scenes. Just a good story and likable characters.
review 2: Definitely a “cozy” mystery! And formulaic too. It has all the stock characters: the sulky teenager nobody understands, the best friend’s tomboy sister who’s grown up
... more into a beauty, the vapid lady of the house married to a boor, the overly-nervous war veteran and our square-jawed stoic hero, who frankly is way too naïve and unworldly for someone who has suffered poverty and humiliation and has supposedly spent the past 10 years working in the gold fields of South Africa. The host is murdered during the stereotypical 1930s weekend house party and everyone assumes it must be a botched robbery or “some tramp”?! What I really don’t get is how Angela Marchmont, supposedly the clever sleuth who solves all, is a totally secondary character. There is no backstory to her, no character development; you’re just as clueless about her at the end as at the beginning! Mildly entertaining for $1.29 on Kindle. less

Not bad, not great. The ending was a little hard to believe, even for the naive narrator.
