review 1: Described as a "well-crafted suspense story...." I had expected something along the lines of the early Nicci French novels, I was, however, disappointed in the lack of suspense. There isn't really that much about the Man of the title, but about the way in which his family copes after his disappearance, which they all seem to do a bit too well.....none of the children go off the rails, the wife doesn't scream or take to her bed crying in rage or sorrow, her parents, to whom she turns for help don't seem to react at all.....all of which I found unrealistic. I like characters to have a little more.....well, character. The book is well-written and it is certainly readable but....I like a book that makes me think not only whilst I'm reading it, but for some time afterwards; thi... mores doesn't do it.
review 2: Book club read 4. This was not what I was expecting after reading the back of the book... I was expecting a gripping crime book but its not that at all. Its a story about a familys journey through hard times when a father leaves suddenly when found to be commiting a crime... the journey of a mother as she struggles to accept what as happened and take on a new role proving for her broken family. I did find it easy to read and quite satisfying in comparison to othe book club reads recently. less

Engaging novel about loss and recovery, with a surprising appearance by The Group of Seven.

An easy read and page turning. A bit predictable in places but otherwise a good read.
