review 1: to be completely honest, the ending took me by surprise. when i picked the book up, i was convinced i was about to read a rather cliche story on human isolation, expression and communication, when, in reality, the book was more than that. morrall's writing is simple; she has a way of weaving incidents into everyday life that makes strange thoughts, people and events seem perfectly ordinary. [the portion below contains details regarding plot]all the while i was an unsuspecting reader believing that the book was simply about a socially inept woman who never left her childhood awkwardness and introversion behind, who had to make conscious effort to fit into society and who felt like she could not understand herself and people around her. later on in the book, readers will gai... moren knowledge that jess was, in fact, suffering from autism (asperger's) all the while. for me, this came as an epiphany that seemed to explain her odd behaviour, and yet was also a deep shock since morrall's portrayal of jess (and joel) never raised my suspicion of them suffering from anything more than simple introversion and internal struggle.
review 2: This was one of the best books for 2008.It has depth, touching story, psychological insight, and on the top of this, the style is so readable and light, and at the same time clear and intelligent. This is the story of Jessica- the girl and Jessica-the grown-up woman, divorced, living with her son who seems enclosed in his own world. The narration moves smoothly between childhood and present. We sense from the start that there is something not quite fitting with Jessica. However, her voice as a grown-up is confident and she seems to get along with life just fine,so we cannot grasp what is wrong with her. She unfolds before us the story of her unhappy marriage and the difficulties of raising a son who would not communicate with her in the ordinary way children do. Analysing her childhood and her failure to build a family,Jessica gradually comes to astonishing revelation about herself. This was a touching, sad and at the same time, enlightening moment. It made sense to conclude the whole novel. less
