review 1: I liked neither the story nor most of the characters....I was also annoyed at the translation, which had telltale signs of a lack of understanding of either French or English or both. Also, sometimes the historical details read like the authors' recitation from their notes...Too bad. I really really want a great historical French detective series! Well, in addition to the marvelous Maigret series by Simenon which at this point is historical! I must keep looking...
review 2: Set in 19th century Paris at the time of the Exhibition and the installation of the eponymous tower, this breezy book deals excellently with the history of the period. The murders that occur are not as fascinating. The main protagonist, Victor Legris, is a bookseller who lives with the (Japa
... morenese) man who brought him up. Victor is puzzled by the deaths of several people in the lead up to the grand opening of the Eiffel Tower (and indeed on it), supposedly attributed to bee-stings. From then on, it's pretty much straightforward. In the original French, the book was a bestseller, but in translation, it is fairly pedestrian, reading almost as a parody (for another weak series, check out Gilbert Adair's Agatha Christie tributes) less

Decent light reading. It has plot holes but the characters are enjoyable.
