review 1: You can argue Cussler's books are being cranked out, formulaic and essentially variations on a theme, but perhaps that's not a bad thing! This book is a return to form for the series, one I enjoyed reading from start to finish. The premise is interesting but a bit scientifically unsound, although that's never been a major problem for Cussler books! The story unfolds nicely, there's the usual characters, slightly more developed as in almost every book in the series, and I got hooked and stayed hooked. In the end, that's the mark of a good read for me: some Cussler books I can put down and not feel the need to finish but this one was read in a couple of enjoyable days. A recommended addition to the series, and I can only hope his future books live up to this standard and not... more be like a few of the more recent disappointments. Recommended for Cussler fans for sure, and a good read for those who are new to him.
review 2: I took a two-year break from Cabrillo on the boys. Got tired of them. A fun enough read, but just the same old stuff recycled over and over. Nothing memorable. Like a TV sitcom. Halfway through the first chapter in this one, I remembered why I took a break from this series. It's just a formula fiction. The grownup version of the teenage vampire books that the middle school girls are reading. Good enough book -- just as good as the first four-five Cabrillo books, which I liked very much -- but I've moved on as a reader. less
