review 1: Hmmmm... weird.Yup, that about sums it up. Definitely not what I was expecting. I think part of the problem with this book is that is was marketed as much funnier than it turned out to be. With lines like "man-sized baby kitten" and "Yes, their son is OMG so cute" in the summary, I was hoping for a little more in-your-face-humor. Instead, the narrative mirrors Kafka's not-so-funny writing, adding pointed jabs at said not-so-funny writing along the way. Throughout most of the book any reference to 'insect' was replaced with 'cat', a clever play on the translation of Ungeziefer, but really that's where the cleverness ended. A dull re-write that was more confusing than entertaining. Although I am now haunted by images of man-cat hybrids, so it has that going fo... morer it.
review 2: The Metamorphosis was weird enough. Quirk books shouldn't have tried to change it. It failed make the kitten angle work, since it stayed really strictly to the original. At least Pride and Prejudice and Zombies had some wiggle room for the zombies.I also found it weird that parts of The Trial and comments on Kafka himself from cat Franz's dream sequence were included. They didn't add to the story, or make the kitten aspect more palatable, just way more sadly depressing and awkward.Just a total WTF book. less
