review 1: I guess I would describe this book as a crass, over the top farce. Unfortunately, I think farce is a lost art. Or a never-was art. I'm familiar with satire and spoof. Farce...I got nothing. I can't even think of an example. How do I even know this is a farce? I might have learned about it in college, but damned if I can explain.Maybe "stylized" is a more helpful description. All of the characters speak in droll observations and rapid-fire quips. Mix in a bunch of cameos by old-Hollywood historical figures, a crapload of scatological humor (pun intended), a dog named Clitty, some raging alcoholics, and a rather sweet romance between two talented young women.Moxie is a nightclub singer and Violet is an almost-famous actress. They meet the day before Violet is scheduled to le... moreave NYC for Hollywood. Violet introduces Moxie to the glbt counterculture and they enjoy a night of delightful debauchery. They share only a kiss, but feel a real connection. Violet arranges for Moxie to get a movie audition and they reunite on the train. Moxie's agent conspires to keep them apart, and story devolves into a series of crazy antics between secondary characters. Moxie's agent is poisoned with some medicine that attacks his bowels. If clit jokes and ass mentions offend you, avoid this at all costs. I was laughing at some scenes but wished for more romance. Also, the characters' behavior is truly awful. Violet is quick to attack others verbally and her friends mock people ruthlessly. Instead of cheering them on, I began to feel sorry for Moxie's agent and other targets. The historical details are fun, and it helped that I know a little about the studio system from a class I took in film history/politics. There are some anachronisms (assiness, ejaculating rainbows) but the story doesn't take itself seriously, and the writing quality is high. I'm wavering between 3 and 3.5 stars.
review 2: i really enjoyed this book. in the back of my mind was one negative review i saw that pointed out how the openness and liberal way of speaking was surely not realistic for that time. I thought that it was so entertaining, that i didn't care if it was hard to believe or not. maybe the shock of someone from the 30's speaking and acting in such a manner, is exactly what made it so entertaining.it also makes me curious about what did go on in that time. There are several articles and stories about what is termed the 'gay 30's' and the wild, liberal stuff that went on in certain circles during that time. so it's entirely possible that the lewdness in this book was realistic. i love it, to learn that women in the 30's could be just as feisty and sexual as today. ...and why not! so, this is a very funny, entertaining book with good writing and editing. i liked it and would recommend it. less
