The Elly in Bloom
review 1: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Elly has never felt like she fit in. So when a handsome artist sweeps her off her feet, she falls deeply in love. That is, until that fateful day when she catches him with another woman. Suddenly her whole world is turned upside down and that's when Elly realizes she's much stronger than she had ever thought. This was a fantastic first novel by author Colleen Oakes. Elly is written to be a realistic main character with the desires and insecurities we all have. She takes us her journey (with a few bumps in the road) to finding herself and overcoming heartbreak. There will be times you'll laugh with her and others you'll want to cry with her. I enjoyed this novel so much, Elly became a fast friend ... moreand I look forward to many more adventures. If you like Chick Lit and a light read, then this is certainly the book for you!
review 2: Have you ever read a book and think 'Man, this character is me!'? Well, I told myself this more than once while reading Elly's story. Elly Jordan is a chubby 32 year old who goes through a most devastating lost in her life. Her character goes through such a whirlwind of emotions and I was right there beside her. Sometimes I didn't even remember I was only reading a book and would have to put it down to process what I had just read. She goes through feelings of disappointment, rejection, low self-esteem, and utter hopelessness. I cried when she did, I laughed when she laughed, shoot I even got hungry when she was! Her pain was mine, and I felt so in tune with her character. Ms. Oakes has the power to make her characters so likable and so raw that it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with her writing. This book was so well written and realistic that I found myself in tears by the end. Through a series of unfortunate events, Elly ends up in St. Louis. There, she meets a beautiful friend, Kim, and they hit it off immediately. With the help of her friends, and a sexy Hawaiian guy named Isaac, Elly is able to overcome her painful past. I'd have to give this book five stars. One, because I related so much to the main character, two, because the story was very well-written, and lastly because there's still another book to read! Bring on part two of Elly's story, Ms. Oakes! less
