review 1: Unfortunately this is late because I was on a flight to Arizona and I could not update it until I got here, my internet was down for a day and I was only able to turn it on today. However really great historical fiction book, incorporated a lot of facts yet the author also added a bit of his own it twists. One conflict that I really like is how Jochi eldest son of Ghengis is not recognized by ghengis as his son because apparently he is a "rape born welp." Ironically when Jochi cannot take anymore of his fathers scorn, he leads away his own Tuman (Mongolian military unit) away to live on their own, however Ghengis does not like this and orders his general Tsubodai; more of a father to Jochi the Ghengis ever was, to kill Jochi. With tears rushing down his face Tsubodai kill... mores Jochi as quick as he can, then withdrawing into solitude to mourn. Epic twist of how you can never really trust anyone, not even someone who practically raised you. Also another twist was the fight between Jochi and Chagattai, both brothers but a hatred for each other soo deep that Chaggatai during a battle in which he was suppose to reinforce Jochi did not come to his aid and instead let Jochi almost die. Really interesting side conflict!
review 2: Excellent series. I only knew the story of a Mongols very generally and I must say, this book opened my eyes. I highly appreciate how the author adds notes to the end of every book to make it clear where the took some liberties and which parts are true. I do think the series slows down a bit after Genghis death and picks up again once you get Kublai and Mongke's story. I must say that the author's choice to make the one gay character in the book a psycho did rub me wrong. He did explain his reasoning behind it and I'm sure it makes sense from a historical point of view, but it still stood out to me. It doesn't change that this is an excellent series. I do wish he would go on to write more about Kublai. less
