review 1: "Ninja Red Riding Hood" was such a fun book! The images were very vibrant and bold with colors and at times almost had a comic book feel to them by including speech bubbles. I really liked how in the beginning of the story, the wolf talked about wanting bacon and saying that "To huff and to puff was no longer enough" relating to The Three Little Pigs. The connection that they made between the two stories was really nice because students can read about the three little pigs and then read this story. It almost seems like a continuation. The book tells the story of a wolf who can no longer catch his prey, so he joins ninja school. When he thinks that this will be enough to catch some food he heads off and meets Riding Hood. The story goes on of how he tries to pretend to be Ri... moreding Hood's granny, and tries to attack her. However, Riding Hood went to Ninja school too, so they must duel. When her granny comes back, Riding Hood attacks and beats the wolf. He ends up surrendering and says he will stop eating meat and decides to join yoga instead of being a ninja. To include this book in a classroom, the students can learn some ninja moves that are included in the book or gets some books on karate. Students could also learn yoga moves in which they can use to calm down in class and at home. This is a good way to get the students moving as well. Since it is a fractured tale students could also compare this version to the original Little Red Riding Hood story. This book would be ideal for third and fourth graders.
review 2: This fractured fairy tail written by Corey Rosen Schwartz is humorous and engaging for all elementary school students. In the story, the wolf is very hungry for some bacon, but he is having trouble catching his prey. As a result, he enters ninja school and learns several different aggressive moves. After attending school, he dresses up as grandma and slips into her bed. Little Red Riding hood comes over with her treats and discovers the wolf is waiting for her. When the wolf tries to eat little red riding hood he discovers that she attends ninja school too. They fight and then gran comes in (she just left from tai chi). Needless to say, Little Red Riding Hood and her gran beat the wolf. They make him promise to give up red meat. In the end, the wolf enrolls in a yoga class to get rid of his stress. This book would make a great addition to any Red Riding Hood text set. Even the youngest learners would be able to compare and contrast this story with the original tale. less
