review 1: I must say that first I saw the movie and then I read the original script to try to understand some things, but I did not succeed. The film, despite the stellar cast is nothing special, the actors seem to just play and despite Cameron Diaz as a mean woman is sufficiently credible, reading the script is pretty obvious that she was not their first choice, who comes out best is, as usual, Javier Bardem. The book is strange because first of all thank God Cormac McCarthy writes so much better and above all there sentences regarding sex he usually skips, also a lot of this book is not on the film, including the politically incorrect phrases and pregnancy. All in all I prefer to go back to the old author, before he was convinced by Ridley Scott.
review 2: *Having read some other of Cormac's books I wasn't exactly expecting this book to be full of flowers and butterflies and a happy ending. Even so, I was still unprepared for the events that take place in this book. It is well written with an exciting plot line that makes the book hard to put down, if only in disbelief of what you have already read and you cannot believe that it is going to get worse. This book has been the first book in quite a while to be able to genuinely shock me, although certainly not for the right reasons. There is no silver lining and there does not appear to be any moral or artistic message attached to the suffering in this story, and consequently it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. less
