review 1: Good, escapist tale. 3.5 stars if .5 stars were available. Jessie, a young woman in Australia in the early 19th century, has run away from an abusive husband. The story is narrated by her stillborn daughter (not a spoiler), which was admittedly different from a reader's perspective (and not particularly effective, in this reader's opinion). Jessie has had a tough life -- a young runaway, a convicted horse rustler, and now on the run from the law and vigilante cowboys. Interesting to read about life on a farm in Australia during this time period; beautiful descriptions of the Australian outback. Reminds me of Cormac McCarthy; bleak, mostly desolate and characters that leave a strong impression.
review 2: So, this book is about a female horse thief and wrangler
... more in the 1920's. Her name was Jessie Hickman, and she was a badass outlaw. I respect that this book is fiction, but I wish it were more truthful. It has quite a bit of flowery language, and the reader has to focus on the details to be able to piece the story together. I'm glad that at least a version of her story is out there. She seemed like quite an amazing woman. less

Interesting historical fiction, however, the overall feel of the novel was depressing.

Great read, it was historical in nature. And kept me trying to guess the outcome
