review 1: This started out well. Another Urban Fantasy with Harry Dresden leanings. The main character is interesting and I am curious about some of his sidekicks. The action is good, the story really moves along. The setting of Las Vegas is a nice change, too.On the negative side, the magic system isn't defined at all, which was a little disappointing. He uses playing cards, but how they are imbued with magic isn't explained. The gory bits were too gory for my taste, but YMMV. What changed my review down to a 3 was the conclusion. I liked the set up, but without adding spoilers, the conclusion is unrealistic in that world. Maybe if the outcome had arrived in say book 3, with a longer period of gaining trust, it might have been more acceptable. I think it was too soon, considering t... morehe ramifications, unless it is a ruse and a set up for book 2, which it didn't feel like.I will probably put book 2 on the TBR list, because despite its failings, the writing is good.
review 2: Dissapointing. I felt the plot was clichéd and plucked from different better-known novels. I'm still unsure what the extent of Faust's abilities are. Faust's character fluctuates between timid and conflicted, to shotgun-wielding and pissed-off within a few pages. I didn't appreciate the lengthy and detailed descriptions of acts of perversity and gore that added nothing to the plot. I won't move on to book #2 just because there's so many other authors in urban fantasy that consistently deliver the goods and deserve my hard-earned money more. less

Sharp, clever and robust. I can't wait for the next installment in this series!

Magic and dark arts a plenty. Not my cup of tea. Well written but not for me.

A film noir book in the best sense. Great book and very enjoyable read.

Loved it! The protagnoist was tortured--without being despicable.
