review 1: A fun look at someone I've always wondered about: the doctor who collected the curiosities housed in Philadelphia's best kept secret museum, the Mutter Museum. In addition to telling the reader what Mutter was like as a boy, a man, a physician, and a teacher, it also provides a broader look at Philadelphia in Mutter's day - just before the Civil War, during the advent of surgical anesthesia. As a Philadelphian, I found it fascinating.
review 2: ***Actual rating 3.5***Although this book reads like a dream I feel as though the author may have dug into her own imagination a bit in bringing Dr Mutter to "life". As a lover of medical history, Mutter was always someone who intrigued me, but frankly there isn't much documentation about him. This does become apparent a
... mores you read this book and find a good third of it is actually dedicated not only to Dr Mutter, but the history of Jefferson Medical College and it's famous "faculty of '41" (esp Dr Charles Meigs). Most will enjoy this and I do suggest giving it a go, but as always keep a good head on your shoulders and do your own homework if need be. less

Fascinating biography of a man ahead of his time and able to do much good for us all.
