review 1: The description of the book intrigued me--magic, a curse, lost loves. It sounded great. However it seems to have lost something in the translation (literally translated from Spanish). The women who are the main characters are not likeable and a little crazy (or a LOT crazy). The magic is questionable at best. It becomes tiresome to keep reading about killing and eviscerating chickens and small animals. Even the love scenes lack depth. Again, I think something was lost in the translation. I will readily admit I do not know the culture well enough. Translating is a tricky business because the nuances, feelings, and meanings can be lost. I think that is what happened here.I did not finish this book although I read about 2/3 of it. However I will pass it on to membe... morers of my book club and see what they think about it.
review 2: Covering 4 generations of the same "cursed" family this novel reminded me strongly of "One Hundred Years of Solitude". The narration was beautiful. I was totally entranced by the imagery of Scarlet Manor and the rise and fall of the crazy Laguna's. I loved the magical realism elements in the story, it just all fit together perfectly. I felt a lot of pity for the characters and their life choices but wasn't really emotionally invested. They weren't entirely real at times devolving into caricatures but I think that was part of the charm. less
