review 1: There is a bit of magic going on here! 50% through this fantasy book which I will call soft fantasy since I really don't know much about the fantasy elements. I can say the characters are holding this story. Very well done!!!The last half had a lot of catching up to do and there was a big push to world build. I thought the fantasy elements were fascinating, but because it felt so rushed at the end I'm not sure I have a good understanding of the world and this sect of people with powers. I'm guessing they are Fae but that is just a guess. All in all this is a really fun and well done mashup of historical/fantasy/YA novel.
review 2: I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. The idea of Jane Eyre with a Supernatural twist caught my atte
... morention to Moonless. I was looking forward to reading this book with the classic in mind. However, this book turned out to be something different. It was not a retelling of Jane Eyre at all; instead, it had its gothic qualities about it that made it somewhat like Jane Eyre. Though I do admit I was a bit disappointed about this realization, I was still pleased with the unique concept this story had. I liked the spookiness of this book. Crystal Collier did a wonderful job in capturing the mystery and suspense of the supernatural. She was able to make creaking sounds and turning heads into something frightening. Also, having characters like Belleza helped to heightened the creepy aspect of the book.Though as interesting as the concept of the story was, I did struggle with reading this book. I was very confused after the first two chapters as to what was going on. Many questions were risen and I felt dazed trying to figure things out. Because of this, I found myself becoming disinterested to what was happening to the main character Alexia. Another flaw that I found with the book was the insta-love that Alexia had for Kiren. I absolutely understood why Kiren fell in love with Alexia. He pretty much knew Alexia most of her life without her knowing it. Alexia on the other hand, only saw him once and immediately was in love with him. She kept drooling over Kiren's intense sapphire eyes and just how handsome he was. It made me roll my eyes a few times. I simply do not enjoy insta-love stories. Besides these flaws, I was still able to enjoy the story, especially the suspenseful parts. Boy, oh boy! Some of these were quite good! I simply enjoy reading books with supernatural twists.Overall, this was a decent read. It was fast and easy to read, and had a pretty good plot. Though it was not the Jane Eyre that I was expecting, it still had the gothic sense to it. less
