review 1: They just don't write 'em like this anymore! This is a classic British police procedural whodunnit. I've read lots in this series, but not recently, so I snapped this up when I stumbled across it in the library. Det. Bill Slider and his pals are such fun to spend time with that the plot hardly matters. This one has a nice twist at the end that Slider discovers through old-fashioned interviewing and following his instincts. However, I realized when I finished that if the police had checked the victim's cellphone, they could've solved the case in Chapter 2 or thereabouts. Ah, technology takes all the fun out of crime-solving!
review 2: I love Slider, but I haven't read one of these in years. This reminded me of why I like them: the in-jokes, the clever repa
... morertee, the slang...and Slider and his team being smart and politically adept within the department. In this book, we've got a missing (and eventually found murdered) woman with a horrific background who is surrounded by people who could have had reason to kill her. By the end, the murderer is found, but it's so sad and wasteful and horrible that it makes me glad I'm not a cop. less

The usual reliable police procedural starring Bill Slider & Harrod-Eagles's "punny" language

I like these books by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, most especially the witty dialogue.
