review 1: This text is about a moment in Civil Rights history that not many students learn about. It is about the 4,000 black students (from elementary to high school) who chose to go to jail for a week. These students were able to help desegregate Birmingham, but their story is seldom told. This text would be very engaging for students since it tells about people their age who were able to make a difference. It is also nonfiction.
review 2: Another strong addition to Civil Rights literature for kids. Cynthia Levinson follows four young people (aged NINE! to 17) who participated in the Birmingham Children's March in 1963--a Martin Luther King, Jr.-led effort to fill the jails with people arrested for breaking segregation laws to draw attention to the injustices of the A
... morelabama segregation laws. The book uses the stories of these four students to spin out the rather astonishing story of how King's church-based, non-violent protest actually worked. Kids will be fascinated to find out that many adults would not participated, but that students willingly joined in--and not to skip school--but to fight for their rights. I suspect many will also be upset by the racist violence directed at these idealistic kids. The many photographs in the book draw attention to the respectful behavior of the protesters, who to a person appear well-dressed, orderly, and are carrying signs politely pointing out the injustices of their lives. A great book to use to show students that the world didn't change simply because Martin Luther King gave a speech, it changed because people (especially young people) worked for change. Very compelling. less
