review 1: I wasn't sure what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed reading about the royalty in 1800's along with their customs and how they interacted with "commoners". This was done from perspectives of characters including an officer, a heiress and their families and friends. I was surprised to read about the Empress of Austria's habits, even more so when I realized that those small details were in fact truth.
review 2: Nice to see Empress Elizabeth of Austria in an historical novel. Also that Bay Middleton must have been quite dashing--fathers Winston Churchill's future wife with a woman married to someone else, then takes a six-year break from his betrothed to cavort with a beautiful empress. Cool, though, that the main characters, and many of the supporting ones, actual
... morely lived. Probably best not to look them up in Wikipedia though, before reading. Also, the ancestors and distant relations to Princesses Diana and Kate--really did play a role in this story. less
