review 1: I'm not a big fan of the Romantic poets, but found this group biography fascinating. Daisy Hay's understanding of the emotional currents among the various members of the group was sensitive and, I think, very perceptive. Espousing democracy and free love was all very well, but attempting to live by these principles given the family law regime and societal sexism of the day left the women and children of the circle terribly vulnerable. Excellent read.
review 2: This was a great biography about the Shelleys (Percy and Mary), Mary's half-sister Claire, their friends Leigh and Marianne Hunt, with a little bit about Lord Byron. Keats is named in the title, but this book is really not about him at all. I like the idea of a "group biography" but I think this might h
... moreave been a little better if it really just zeroed in on the Shelleys and let some of these other people go. They all led fascinating lives, however. less
