The Mockingbirds
review 1: Some schools have honour codes.Others have handbooks. Themis Academy has the Mockingbirds.Themis Academy is a quiet boarding school where the students are exceptional, the faculty trust that everyone does the right thing, and the administration sees only what it wants to see – perfection. So when Alex spends a drunken-night with a male student and awakes to evidence of a sexual encounter she can’t remember, she doesn’t know where to turn for help. As she slowly comes to terms with the fact that she was date raped, she enlists the help of the Mockingbirds – a secret society of her peers whose mission is to right the wrongs that the faculty and administration don’t even know exist. In standing up to her attacker, Alex discovers a strength she never knew she had and ... morebegins to understand that if you love something or someone – especially yourself – it’s worth fighting for.
review 2: A good read on an important topic and without getting preachy or didactic about it - which probably makes this more of a 3.5-4 stars. While sometimes I thought it was trying hard to hammer home the point of consent, it's probably because I'm already 100% on side with the messaging (having worked on campaigns about enthusiastic consent). In hindsight, the message needs to be in there and it was done well. I liked that the friends never once questioned Alex - they accepted her truth and stood by her when she had doubts. I liked the characters and the idea of vigilante (but fair) justice within the private school, but where it lost me a bit was how often the character of Alex would remind me that she was good at music, Martin was good at science, etc. I'm not sure why each character had to be so good and so passionate about just one area of school. less

This book was actually really good, although I went into it not expecting to enjoy it.
