review 1: It wasn't necessarily a bad book, but I just couldn't get into it. The first couple chapters were just showing snapshots in time, and while I understood the need to show how she became what she is, I didn't see the point for the next few chapters, and I definitely didn't like how whiny the protagonist was. I like urban fantasy because the woman is usually strong and independent and ready to kick some butt, but I didn't get that vibe (even after being told how strong and wonderful she was).
review 2: This is a rather strange book that I noticed in the book store a couple of weeks ago and sounded interesting. It's the story of a woman who was falsely condemned as a witch in the 1600s and burned at the stake, but retrieved from her fate by a demon. The demon off... moreers her immortality and superhuman powers in return for becoming his servant. She then spends 300 years as his assassin, killing at his command. However, after centuries of doing this, she finally starts to regret it, and eventually decides to leave the demon's service. He withdraws his power from her, leaving her mortal, and she sets about trying to both escape his wrath, and make restitution for all the murder she's done.The premise of the book was interesting and it was rather similar to a story I had been thinking about for a long time, which is why I picked it up. It ended up being executed better than I thought it would be. It's not brilliant literature but it's reasonably suspenseful. I thought the first half of the book dragged somewhat and at about the halfway point I decided not to get books 2 and 3 of the series. But the second half was much better, and the ending was very intense and exciting, and I enjoyed the second half enough that I will be picking up #2, at least. less
