review 1: Three sentences in the beginning of this book caused my abandonment of it immediately. I'll admit that's rash and unjust, but at least I didn't rate a book that I haven't read which is far more unjust. Here are the suspect ideas: "reject appeals to authority", "religion in some form will always be with us", and "I would like to acknowledge the Unitarian Universalist religion for being a place where people search for answers to religious questions and are not given the answers to swallow whole." First, words are important in education, so I expect a more careful use of them. If the authors mean that parents should teach their children to reject fallacious appeals to authority like the Bible, then I stand corrected. If the authors mean that children should accept as a fact t... morehat religion has always existed and will always exist, I totally disagree, and that idea lays the foundation for zero change. Both Matsumura and Devor seem to work from the values of the UU church in that they warrant a multi-faith approach to reality. Those ideas aren't beyond belief, they rather embrace mystery over mastery. And that's no improvement over the discomforts that every child feels, humanist free-range or not.
review 2: This is a practical guide to raising freethinkers and includes a wealth of material, practical exercises and references. This is not a book to be merely read, rather it is a resource for the freethinking parent. The book deals with numerous topics such as religious exposure, sex education, finding meaning in life, encouraging curiosity, and coping with death and loss. These issues are approached in a thoughtful and practical way, giving humanistic and caring ideas and techniques to help achieve a high standard of parenting.I intend to keep this book at hand for use in the future as the need arises. less
