review 1: I listened to the audio version...and it was wonderful. The narrator did a greAt job with the different characters and accents. I knew from the reviews that the main story was about a man setting off with his two sons in the frozen Ukraine in search of a child that was taken from the village. It is so much more. The book keeps a steady pace as the crunch through the snow...the history of Luka, war, the communist takeover, who people chose to be in the face of danger and fear, and what is worth living or dying for. Loved the book.
review 2: This book was recommended to me as something I would enjoy after reading Child 44. Although they both take place in similar areas of the world and both have to do with murders of children, history of Russia (and the Ukra
... moreine) post-Alexander. I preferred Child 44, but this book wasn't bad. I could have been happy if I didn't finish the book, but I saw it through to the end. The hunting aspect was interesting, but overall I just could not get into the book. It was overly long and unnecessary. Nothing lost and nothing gained from this book. less
