review 1: "The Butcher of Khardov" by Dan Wells tells the story of Orsus, a giant of a warcaster who tries to get over his violent tendencies to please his girlfriend Lola, who abhors killing. His fellow hooligans wonder why Orsus allows himself to be ordered around by his girlfriend, and we do too. He obviously is doomed to failure over his anger management problem. This novella, nominated for a 2013 Hugo, is apparently another favorite of the steampunk-gamer community. I'm more of an F&SF fan, so please take my lukewarm reception with a grain of salt. Or go pound sand with a steamjack.
review 2: At first, I wasn't sure about this story. Sometimes, I liked it, and sometimes I was bored by the big brute who must avenge his dead woman trope. But honestly, by the final scene
... more, it mostly won me over. I think it was the unreliable narrator that won me. Orsus is not sane, and the reader is right there with him, which is really interesting. As a feminist it bugged me, because the female characters are far and few between, and mostly for being rescued and avenged, with a few exceptions but as a reader, I came to really enjoy it. less

Not as irritating as the narrator could be in Equoid, but also not as interesting.
