review 1: I got this book as a free download on my Nook. It is the second in the series, and I have not read the first. Reading the first book in the series is not an absolute requirement, as the author does a good enough job of explaining the characters so that the reader is able to follow the story. I would not say the same about the explanation of previous events. The characters keep referring back to what has happened in the past and it got to be a bit annoying after a while because I didn’t know what they are talking about. Also, the “witch’s ladder” featured in the previous book seems to be very important to one of the characters and I was never able to figure out exactly why. I would recommend reading the previous book for these reasons. This book is mostly a traditio... morenal cop mystery with a small amount of the paranormal thrown in. A very small amount. As I am very interested in the paranormal and not so interested in cop mysteries, I found this book to be a bit boring and the title “Eye of the Witch” to be pretty misleading. The witch herself is a somewhat unimportant side character, and the eye of the witch is a thing that only gets mentioned in the last pages of the book. Speaking of the last pages of the book, I found the events at the very end of the book to be pretty confusing and out of nowhere. I’m not talking about how the mystery is solved, just what happens after that. And there are a few big strings that never get tied up (especially about Benny), but since there are more books in the series I’m going to guess that they might be explained later.
review 2: Honestly, I wasn't quite sure how I felt about this book. I liked the idea that a retired cop could still do so much, and I did enjoy the touch of the occult that went into this novel, but after that the rest of my review will be a little muddled. Granted, I came into this book before reading book 1, and so some of the connections seemed a little far-stretched to me, but there are definitely a few things that I liked and disliked about this particular novel. The conversations and relationships between the characters seemed strained, and maybe even a little fake. There were some things within the novel about solving the case that just seemed to be too easy, even with the aspect of the occult thrown in. I did like, however, the story itself. The characters were interesting, and they each had their own quirks and strengths, which I liked. I enjoyed the way the author could visualize for me each character he wrote for. less
