review 1: I've followed Dana Goldstein's blogs for several years and I was very happy that her passion for the truth in US education policy shines through in this book. I found her insightful and accurate. Dana can be trusted to seek the truth in US education policy...not just find data that supports her preconceptions as so many other "experts" do. I recommend this book to my fellow teachers. I also recommend this book to those who purport to know something about US education. Read Dana and learn from her example.

... moret's tempting to believe that this controversy is original or even new. It's helpful to see where we've been to understand why we are where we are today. Goldstein definitely has her own opinions which make the book a bit subjective at points and more narrative than descriptive in places, but she does a good job at trying to represent both sides of the issues and support these assertions with evidence. less
