review 1: PI Kate Shugak is hired to figure out whether pilot Finn Grant killed himself, died accidentally or was murdered. It doesn't take Kate long to discover that there are more people who wanted Finn dead than wanted him alive. And some of those people apparently want Kate dead too. Kate is not that easy to kill. She has her sidekick, Mutt, part Siberian Husky, part wolf, all loyal; State Trooper Liam Campbell called her in so he has her back. As does her lover back home. He can call in the cavalry, even long distance. Margerite Gavin did an amazing job with the Alaskan names and pronunciation. Kate is a great character and reading this book made me want to read others in the series.
review 2: This was one of my favorite, maybe my favorite, Kate Shugak mystery. Tru
... moree to author Stabenow's plans for Kate, Kate gets shoved into a chest freezer, a dumpster, and a ship container. Faithful to Kate's uncanny abilities to survive such life threatening situations, she survives these situations. There always seems to be someone who wants to see her dead. I am a great fan of Dana Stabenow and her Kate Shugak. Stabenow writes beautifully about Alaska, especially the Alaska of the Native Alaskans. Beautiful settings abound, except when the setting is the inside of some closed container which contains Shugak. In this story, Kate has, once again, left her own town, and is investigating a death in another part of Alaska. We meet a new set of characters, with little involvement of the characters who are so familiar to readers. Not an Auntie in sight! Mention of, but no presence of Bobby. But a great story is woven without the familiar characters, so their absence is okay. less
