review 1: This was beautiful but unfulfilling. The book received such amazing reviews, but I felt that both Lily and Deshi were underdeveloped, as was their relationship. I liked that Lily brought Deshi to an awareness of the value of his own life, though, and can see how that was a difficult (and western ....) lesson to learn. Perhaps the difficulties I had with both of their characters -- Lily as a bit selfish and clueless, Deshi as too easily conformist and clueless in other ways -- is what did lead to the theme, that being that every life does have its own specific, unique value. But Lily was pretty vapid and I never would have liked her in real life. I did love the length and the artwork, and the premise was fascinating. I just felt that the conclusion was too cliched and undev... moreeloped. However ... still an interesting read.
review 2: THIS BOOK IS BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, the illustrations -- Novgorodoff's signature watercolors -- are stunning and mysterious and moving. Images of faces (Deshi's brother's ghost?) floating behind panels, or the fish in the water. I wanted to know a little more about Deshi and his brother, and the night of Wei's death, but even the gaps here were beautifully done and accounted for. Lily was also a terrific character -- at times painted as a tough lady, and other times hauntingly beautiful. Cool how these paintings can make you see the many sides of each character. less

Visually stunning artwork. Story, less stunning, but appealing in its own way.
