review 1: A book by a world famous author on a topic of great and increasing importance ought to be a fantastic combination. unfortunately it ends as a read about one just idea with tonnes of example. also what annoys is the tendency to paint as black and white and a lack of identifying hidden outcomes. he claims sweat shops are all hell, but what would people do to fill tummies without these sweatshops. stuff like this makes it needlessly uni directional and preachy!!
review 2: A fantastic primer on ecological intelligence, Goleman arms the reader with language from which to begin thinking about their relationship to the living and natural environment, and society at large, especially in terms of our consumption-oriented, growth-centered society. Although interconnected
... more with concepts of sustainability, Goreman discusses more than the triple bottom line of social, economic and environmental goals, and more than meeting today's needs without confounding future goals. He goes a step further, which at its essence, makes the goal of a more environmentally, economically and socially resilient society, one facing global climate change, more severe weather, and peak oil, seem attainable. Sustainability doesn't indict the very foundation of our society—consumption, and our current patterns of such—but, ecological intelligence does. Sustainability says we can continue mindless consumption as long was we do so in a greener way and take our reusable bags to the grocery store; ecological intelligence says we must be mindful of our impacts on each other, animal and plant life, and the natural environment. Ecological intelligence demands more from us, as individuals in our everyday lives, built upon Goleman's three "swarm rules": know your impacts; favor improvements; share what you learn. At its core, this implicates the consumer while empowering them to affect change, and does so well within the confines of a market-oriented society that values individuals holding information that ensures maximization of utility in exchanges between them.A very accessible and engaging read, approached from a perspective that sees the world as it is with and eye for the future. A good read for those looking to be more ecologically aware and a solid foundation from which to pursue further reading on the subjects of community resilience and mindful cosumption. less
