review 1: You might as well just read Wikipedia on the subject. It will be at least as informative (!) and accurate (!!) as The Last Ember, and because it is also better written (!!!) it has the side benefit of allowing you to avoid having your head explode over Levin's gleefully craptastic prose, in which he wallows like a pig in ... well, you know. It is embarrassingly, shamefully bad. It has also taught me that you should not proclaim that any given book is "the worst book ever," because as soon as you do, you will discover that there exists, in fact, one that is EVEN WORSE. So I won't say it -- but I hope to God I never meet the book that can knock this out of the top spot, because that will surely be a sign of the Apocalypse.
review 2: Finished this book at 3:30am.
... more I told myself I wouldn't do it - stay up that late, but the book kept drawing me in. Every night, I stay up late, trying to get further into it, and every day I would research things on the computer, like Cities for Life, an anti- death penalty cause that he talked about. The book is written in a literate Da Vinci Code style, well-researched, and takes a fairly unknown object and weaves a great historical mystery and quest around it. The author is almost a twin of the hero. There are so many twists and turns, so many close calls, Rome, Jerusalem, back to Rome, with a great villain, and some incredible information on current historical revisionism. His website talks more about that. I'm looking forward to future books. less
