review 1: I really enjoyed the first book, so It was no surprise that I also enjoyed this one. It was very intriguing to discover a little more about Genevieve's character beyond what we interpret from Stolen Songbird, and I think we can expect quite a bit more from her in book two. This is a really lovely short story, that gives us more of an impression of Cecile's family and her life before Trollus. It fits in wonderfully, and I'm very glad the author has shared it with us.
review 2: I really enjoyed the Malediction Trilogy world, but I do not feel as though this short story in it added anything to the overall story. Most of the information contained within this was found or inferred from the first novel in the series. Yes, we see the day her mother offers to take her
... morewhen she is seventeen and we see that the mother is, in fact, unlikable. But we already knew she was unlikable and I actually think there were greater facets to the mother's personality/situation hinted at in Stolen Songbird. The Songbird's Overture is decently written but I did not walk away with anything new. less

I didn't like this prequel as much as I loved the first book.
