review 1: This is the first novel in this series although I had already read the second and therefore knew the outcome of some of the plots within Broken Silence which ruined the end a bit. Despite this I found it quite a fast-paced novel with loads of overlapping personal and professional problems arising with Jack Brady. I still like him as a character because he is flawed, unlike a lot of the other detectives about who look at a room and see things that no one else can see and crack a case in a minute. Will definitely keep reading this series.
review 2: I bought this because the story takes place in my home town, Whitley Bay. I was disappointed. I haven't lived there for decades, but I regularly visit and I didn't recognise the town depicted here. Yes, the place is k
... morenown for its rowdy weekend drink binges by outsiders, but there's more to the place than that. There was no real Geordie humour - Geordies, like Brummies and Scousers, have a great sense of humour and don't mind sending themselves up. It was all grey and grim. Yet life is light and dark, even in the police... Every character seemed to run fingers through their hair. The use of the absolutely awful phrasing 'he was sat'/'she was sat' grated. The unwarranted shift of character point of view mid-scene detracted. Yet the main character Jack Brady has potential - though Ramsay has laid on his problems with a shovel - he consumes so much booze, it's surprising he can walk, let alone detect. I'm really reluctant to pick up the sequel, Broken Bodies. I don't blame the author, though, I blame the editor. This could have been so much better, as there were glimmers of good writing and characterisation. I'd give it 2.5, but not 3 stars... less

Reasonable book, good plot line, but could have been written better and was a bit slow at times.
