review 1: Having never read anything Dante wrote before, I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. Oddly enough, an episode of Star Trek: Voyager brought me to La Vita Nuova. The actual poetry and prose in this piece are beautiful and filled with emotion. I lost focus, though, when an explanation of each sonnet was provided. In his attempt to bring the reader more fully into the story, Dante distracted this reader. Perhaps the translation I chose was not the best one. Perhaps that style of writing was needed in Dante's time. Whatever the case, La Vita Nuova is a good read; it's just not great...in my opinion.
review 2: This wasn't as easy to read as "The Divine Comedy". It seemed more archaic but I guess that's also because I'm reading an older translation.
... moreI liked getting a feel of Dante's early biography and seeing some more of his poetry. His context, explanations, and analyses were interesting even if the format they were presented in got old. I get the feeling that the older I get and the more I write the more I will appreciate this book. less
