review 1: I’d probably give this book three and a half stars if I could. I really enjoyed it. I have this thing for Russia and that is what originally drew me to the book. It’s a pretty easy read. I’m a sucker for a good love story and the book gave me exactly that. Although I’m not a dancer myself, I enjoyed the descriptions of the ballet performances and I think balletomanes will appreciate them too. It seems like the author knows what she’s talking about.I was a bit annoyed by the tediousness of the story. It was great getting to know the characters but to me it felt as if the story only really started to get interesting at around two thirds. And as many others have said in their review, the ending is a bit abrupt and leaves wanting for more… (But maybe this is a goo... mored thing. I’ve been reevaluating my thoughts on ‘open endings’ and although I feel most people prefer a clear and happy ending, I also like that with open endings you can decide for yourself how it ends.)
review 2: This book is magical. I absolutely loved it and could hardly put it down. This pleased me especially because I know the author. It gave me insight into Daphne Kalotay and her art, complex and lovely. I very much looking forward to reading her book that followed this one, SIGHT READING. I highly recommend RUSSIAN WINTER. Its very charming. I'll add that when I finished it, I had the immediate impulse to ask Daphne desperately -- and then what happened? less
