review 1: OK, so it's not getting 4 stars for the quality of the prose. Let's just get that out of the way right now. A book about one of my favorite SNL cast members and his dealing with drugs, alcohol, and psychotic breakdowns? Hellz yeah!Seriously, though, this was a rather good book. If you don't give 2 shits for Darrell Hammond or SNL or someone's struggles with sobriety while trying to hold onto his sanity, then don't bother with this one. There are definitely better books to read. Spoiler alert: Darrell Hammond's mom is the true psycho in this story. And that concludes my weak-ass review.
review 2: I'm a huge comedy fan and I heard a few interviews with Hammond that peaked my interest. I always found it intriguing that some of my favorite comedians, those I found m
... moreost funny, were some of the most damaged people I've ever encountered. From his abusive childhood to his substance abuse to his self-mutilation, this guy has some major demons he's fighting, but it made for an engrossing read. Sometimes the gory details were difficult to read but it often lacked emotion and read stoic, clear and detached which bothered me a little. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stories about SNL and learning about his comedy process. I recommend this to all fans of comedy and SNL as long as you don't go into this expecting a lighthearted romp in a chuckle factory. It's dark and heavy and riveting. less
