review 1: Terrible title, great book. Hammond spent 14 years on SNL, and half the fun is his behind-the-scenes stories. But as with so many gifted comics, Hammond was working hard to self-destruct. (The night before Clinton's inauguration, when he should have been enjoying his guest status, Hammond got so drunk, he had to be sent home--and passed out at the airport.) After umpteen tries at rehab, he finally gets it right. Hammond is somewhat circumspect about the horrors of his childhood, but his point is that he used his victim status as an excuse to drink, thus inflicting his pain on his daughter. That's what finally gets him to stop. You can't help crossing your fingers for him, even while he's trying to make you laugh.
review 2: This is really a surprising and startl
... moreing read. I didn't expect the tone of it to be so serious (although there are plenty of comedic breaks). When I was watching him perform at the Comedy Cellar in 2004 and 2005 pretty regularly, I had NO IDEA what Darrell Hammond has been through in his life; the baffling and heartbreaking abuse from his mother, the suicides of close friends and a girlfriend, and the alcohol and drug addiction. It's also enlightening as Hammond experiences and encapsulates the nature of forgiveness so beautifully. Highly recommend! less
