review 1: This is not the best book by Dava Sobel. It lacks the drama of "Longtitude", but it is still of interest to those interested in the history of science. Sobel experiments by writing part of her narrative as a play. She writes prose better. A closer examination of the contradictions and changes in thought patterns at the time Copernicus was ready to reveal his thesis would have made this a more meaningful read. There were definitely politics involved in knowing which train of thought could be challenged and which could not. Also the connection between the evolution of the printing press and the distribution of ideas is not closely examined. Still wondering if Copernicus kept his observations and calculations secret for thirty years, what discoveries have people made that ha... moreve yet to be revealed to the world at large? Also wonder what would Copernicus made of the Internet? I think he would love the fact that anyone on this planet (which is not the center of the universe) can review an early edition of book "On the Revolutions"
review 2: I have loved Sobel's books and looked forward to this one. Unfortunately, this one was not as satisfying. It is two books in one: a history of Copernicus and a play about the steps leading to the publication of his theory. The history portion was very informative and readable. The drama portion suffered because Sobel's dialogue is flat and rather boring. I would rate the book closer to a 3 if it weren't for the play portion. less

An interesting history, the play was a good idea and may run well live, however reading it was slow.

Thought it was well written and did enjoy. The "play" in the middle left me a little nonplussed

A must read for every astronomer, amateur, professional or armchair. Beautiful!

I liked the part with the play, but everything else just read like a textbook.
