review 1: I debated quite a bit whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars. The plot of lacuna reminded me a lot of an original star trek episode--which is not at all a bad thing for the sci-fi genre. However that does mean that the books didn't feel like it was treading any new ground. Chinese is sprinkled throughout the first third or so of the novel, and then is dropped in favor of focusing on more on Liao. The novel focuses entirely on Liao and her spaceship, dropping a lot of earlier subplots or concepts in the novel. I would have like more explanation and description of the events on earth. Similarly during the battles in space, what is going on back on earth? There's enough meat to the novel that those who enjoyed it will welcome a sequel, but the ending is self-contained enough ... morethat I was content.
review 2: This book is a strange combination of exciting conflict in space with an alien species, and a plot with more holes than a cheese grater. The social goings on aboard the ship are described as if this is a cheap romance novel, people seem to respect the chain of command only when it suits them, and the way human scientific progress is being presented is nothing short of ridiculous. I find it highly unlikely that real military personell would act so unprofessionally under these circumstances. Be that as it may, the battles in space are pretty good but there's not nearly enough of it to make you forget about all the interpersonal nonsense that is going on.I'm definitely going to give the next book in the series a chance since I noticed that it has a much higher rating, although that is certainly no guarantee I will like it more, but I'm willing to take the risk since these books are fast reads anyway.71/100 less

Really enjoyed this one and it's been a little while since I read a good ol' space battle.

It was ok. Pretty good for the price ... Free. Wouldn't likely pay for it, sadly.

Interesting concept but poor execution. Predictable plot.
