review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed Gethsemane Hall. This is more of an intellectual horror novel with more emphasis on the "what-if" factor, which I can't really go into without spoiling the ending. However, if you love Gothic novels, this might be your speed. The claustrophobic feel of the house extended to the town and over the characters relentlessly.I loved Meacham--I thought her character was exceptionally well portrayed. She is a survivor from beginning to end and I like the way the novel shifted steadily into her point of view. She is one of the most realistically portrayed female characters that I've seen in a novel.
review 2: This was a rather enjoyable haunted house tale. Early on I was a little thrown off by the religious overtones, but as the book goes on they di... moreminish and it settles into a more traditional horror story. If I were to compare it to another horror novel it would have to be Matheson's Hell House. It has some extreme gore and just a generally dark feeling. It's also told from multiple different points of view ala George R.R. Martin. At first it took some getting used to the different styles of writing depending on the character, but once you get the rhythm it flows like water. This was a great first horror novel, I can't wait for more horror works from Mr. Annandale. less
