review 1: Very erudite work by the director of the translation program at Princeton, peppered with very witty evidence from many many languages. It would be a fun read for anyone with an interest in language, not just translations. I'm not sure I agree with his final thoughts about language, but as a language professional I enjoyed the many examples and trivia very much. It also has an e-less version of one of my favorite poems that made me literally laugh out loud in delight.
review 2: The first several chapters of this book are excellent - after about the midpoint I got a bit tired/bored, and my husband felt the same way. It just got a bit repetitive. However, the first half to 2/3 is really delightful reading: interesting, informative and entertaining simultaneously
... more. In addition, anyone who teaches languages and/or writing will find the book really useful - I repeatedly marked sections and chapters that I want to have intermediate and advanced students read because it will help them with their study of French (of any foreign language). In describes extremely well the complexities of moving between two languages, of what we mean by translation, of how "language" works, and more! less
