review 1: It was good. This gentleman and I have a history and it makes me not care for this but it is very well written. I don't particularly identify with the story though, so that kind of kills it for me. It kind of drags on. The ending kind of just happens, which I'm sure is the point. The dude is much smarter than I am but that doesn't mean I'm obligated to like it. Does it? Whatever. Good job and I'm sure it won some award or something but it wasn't too great.
review 2: This was a very good novel and while the historical setting was unfamiliar to me, I really enjoyed learning about it through these characters. I cared about these characters and I wanted them to find freedom socially and emotionally. Some reported this to be funny, but I didn't find it too humorous.
... more There are better novels involving family dynamics and the immigrant experience, but this was interesting and engaging and a very worthy novel to read. less
