review 1: Looking for the King, by David C. Downing, was not what I expected. The story is, ostensibly, about Tom McCord's search for historical evidence of King Arthur. Early on, Tom is accosted by two men while using one of those new fangled metal detectors at an archeological site. He gets away but is afraid that he has stepped on some toes. He soon meets and convinces Laura Hartman, a fellow American, to join forces and act as his assistant.Tom has the good fortune to run into and be introduced to C.S Lewis, which also leads to meeting J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams, members of the Inklings writers. They get together to talk about whatever they want, from world politics (it’s the beginning of WWII) to history and religion. They help Tom and Laura with their own theories ... moreand ideas on where to find possible proof of King Arthur. They are also intrigued by Laura’s dreams, which are filled with Christian symbols. This is where the books starts to lose me as it becomes a story of Tom and his not being a believer, and finding his way to accept god and belief. I did not see it coming although there were clues. It was not done in a bad way and stayed entertaining through the end. I just am not that big a fan in religion. I think that this was what I did not expect the most.
review 2: I bought this book because I liked the idea that it involved the Inklings, the literary group that included, most famously, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The plot of this very short book was rather thin though, and the Christian aspect became heavy handed. In the beginning a character talks about the dying god myth that has been common in many religions for thousands of years but then explains that Christianity is the myth come true. Um...how do we know that? Doesn't everyone think that about their own religion? The idea of the book was interesting but ultimately it didn't really work for me. less
