review 1: His dad is gone in the military in Afghanistan .this book is a great book, so far I have only read about 62 pages of it.the book is told from Derek 's point of view .the book in the beginning is about Derek in 5th grade elementary school and one day he woke up in the moring getting ready for school and he didn't know it was Saturday he thought it was Friday and he went out to the bus stop and it was raining he thought the bus was coming but it wasn't at all.then later on budgies mom stopped buy and picked him up and she was disappointed .then when he got to school they called him Saturday boy and that's how he got his nickname.he also had to climb a tree he was challenged by barely and then his friends left him by himself and his teacher brought him home.and last he has ... morebeen practicing for his play called the Christmas carol and Derek play s little Scrooge and violet a girl he likes at school plays the sister .
review 2: I adored this book, and the main character Derek Lamb. Contrary to what some other reviewers have said, I do think 11-12 year olds will relate to this story and the things Derek goes through. When do we stop believing in Santa, playing with toys, watching cartoons? Derek's character is well developed and David Fleming writes artfully in the first person creating a totally believable and lovable eleven year old. Mom, Aunt Josie, and Derek's "archenemy" Budgie are a great supporting cast. The character of Jason Lamb is developed skillfully through his letters and Derek's memories. Despite it's serious topics, there is a considerable amount of humor-"Budgie said that if you hiccup and laugh at the same time your lungs can come out your mouth." This book was chosen for the Vermont Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award list for 2014-15 and I believe it will be a popular title. less
